How What If Took Scarlet Witch’s Tragedy to a Whole New Level of Horror
Marvel’s What If …? The scariest moment was presented with a darker twist and reveals how things could have turned out far worse.
While many events within Marvel’s history can be considered iconic, none has a similar impact as M-Day. The Scarlet Witch brought the mutant population down to a tiny fraction of its former self in only three words. What If… made things worse by extending the grief of Wanda to the point that it encompassed almost every villain and hero that the Marvel Universe has known.
Paolo Pantalena, Jim McCann, and Brian Reed read “What If… Scarlet Witch ended the ‘House of M’ by stating”No More Power?’ From 2008’s House of M, the viewers are transported back to the time when Wanda Maximoff changed the course of history when she declared “No More Power!” After discovering the shocking fact that the House of M was a fact, and Quicksilver was killed by Magneto’s hand, Wanda decided to adopt a revenge-based stance against her father. The Scarlet Witch decided to wipe out the powers of mutants by altering one word.

What If …? M Day was a Marvel M Day
Wanda created Magneto and the other mutants powerless, declaring “No further power” instead of “No More mutants”. The scope of this change was enough to make you shiver however the consequences were even more shocking. It reaffirmed what the readers knew already in frightening new ways. The original Marvel timeline’s M-Day version had anti-mutant terrorists make use of the occasion to unleash a volley of attacks against institutions that were then in no way protected. What If? the House of M created an unimaginable power vacuum? It resulted in more technologically or classically inclined organizations such as A.I.M. and Hydra joining forces to create an almost invincible Front of Evil.
Iron Man and other heroes were able to fight in the frontline despite having no superhuman powers. While this did serve to emphasize the severity of Wanda’s actions, however, it wasn’t enough. While Wanda’s Decimation was reversed within the Marvel Universe, it is impossible to prove it ever happened to reverse within the What If? This is a rebuke of how awful things could have gone. It’s not just a matter of comic books. There are numerous reasons why the Marvel Cinematic Universe should explore the same territory even if it’s not exactly identical.

The MCU: How a Future Without Powers Might Look
There’s nothing to suggest that M Day or Decimation will soon be shown on the big screen, even though mutants aren’t yet an integral element of the MCU. Marvel’s What If …? is one of the most suitable for smaller screens. This is an excellent opportunity to look at the most likely scenarios that Wanda’s ability to alter reality can lead to. Although there are obvious questions regarding where this story could take us, based on the MCU’s current products The answers are evident.
In 2021’s WandaVision and 2022’s Doctor Strange, in the Multiverse of Madness, Elizabeth Olsen played the Scarlet Witch as an evil threat that can alter the world according to her preferences. Each of them allowed Wanda to be a hero who at least partially justified her actions. If they never occurred, Wanda would have the chance to confront the most dangerous elements of her power in a similar way to what Doctor Strange did in the first season’s What If. This would allow Wanda to take on the other powers of the universe and could also be the start of her journey to never lose again. The fans could see this dark side if there’s a continuation of the show.
